This book offers a multidisciplinary approach to conservation issues related to the marine otter (Lontra felina). The main goal is the systematization of different research efforts on this species, to contribute with conservation policy design and implementation. The authors contribute their achievements in conservation, ecology, status in freshwater habitats, habitat fragmentation effects, interaction with human activities and recommendations for an effective conservation of the species. The book is directed first and foremost towards researchers and authorities and people involved in conservation tasks of otters.


Despite in the last decades some studies and efforts on Lontra felina has carried in Peru and Chile, some information can be gathered to fill the gaps on marine otter conservation in Peru. That is the main goal of the book Conservation of Marine Otter. Moreover, the publication will be the first book published at international level on Lontra felina with the participation of several experimented researchers on this threatened and endemic species.

Liliana Ayala, PhD. in Applied Sciences, Universidad de Antofagasta, Chile (2020). Biologist Universidad Nacional Federico Villarreal, Lima (2004). Research on marine birds, mammals, turtles, and artisanal fisheries over the last 20 years. She has been working as a Principal Investigator at the Peruvian coast and Antarctica as a researcher of the Peruvian Association of the Conservation of Nature (APECO) and at the Peruvian Sea Institute (IMARPE). Member of the World Seabird Union, Pacific Seabird Group, Society for Conservation Biology, and Peruvian specialist CITES. Currently, she is a professor of Marine Biology career at Universidad Cientifica del Sur in Lima, Peru.


Raúl Sanchez, Researcher, planner and advisor on issues of Biodiversity Conservation, Infrastructure and Development. Graduated in Biological Sciences from Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. He has experience in wildlife, protected areas, conservation, and environmental management of infrastructure projects. He obtained environmental licenses, authorizations, and certifications and helped make environmental strategic decisions on projects with value greater than $ 5 billion.


Gonzalo Medina-Vogel, PhD. in Wildlife Ecology, Lincoln University, New Zealand (1999). Veterinary Doctor Universidad Austral de Chile (1989). Founding Director of the Andres Bello University Veterinary Medicine School. Founding Director Doctorate in Conservation Medicine U. Andrés Bello. Research in ecology and conservation of aquatic and terrestrial carnivores, cetaceans, seabirds, bats, human dimension in conservation and ecological restoration. Member Ecology Society of Chile and IUCN/SSC Otter Specialist Group. Co-founder Latin American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians. Professor of Conservation Medicine, Ecology of Infectious Diseases, Biological Invasions and ecology and conservation of freshwater ecosystems. Professor at the Sustainability Research Center (CIS) of the Andres Bello University.  In addition, he is part member of the IUCN Otter Specialist Group Coordinator for South America.
