Kate Chopin (1850-1904) est née à Saint-Louis d’un père irlandais et d’une mère française. En 1882, à la mort de son mari, elle entreprend de traduire des œuvres de Maupassant et de rédiger ses premières nouvelles. L’Éveil paraît en 1899; l’accueil scandalisé du public la laisse amère et déçue jusqu’à sa mort. Celle par qui le scandale arriva ne connut qu’une gloire posthume.
