A recognised international authority on Bakhtin's work, he has co-edited Bakhtin and Cultural Theory (1989, 2005) with David Shepherd, written Mikhail Bakhtin: An Aesthetic for Democracy (1999) and contributed articles on Bakhtin for many leading journals.
